Research suggests one of the most prominent stressors are career related. Since childhood, one question we are asked is “Bade hokar kya ban na hai”, and the answers that come are Doctor, engineer, pilot, etc. Not because we are passionate but because of monetary benefits. Along with personal growth, the pressure from others to pick a good career path can contribute to students choosing the wrong major.
More than half of people choose streams and careers based on what gives them the utmost security. When you choose a job that you don’t love, every day will be a day of frustration, anger, and stress. You must be thinking, what to do then? Monetary is important? YES! Will I have to go with careers that serve monetary terms? NO! What do I do now? Art, Literature, science, everything has financial terms, it is about how will you make it worth it. Before going on how let us understand why? First of all, why are you choosing a certain career? Is it because I am 25 and I need a promising career, or because my parents want me to become an IAS or my society will respect me for my professional choice, or because of security or Because you are interested and you have certain abilities? The former makes every day, a day of regret. Let us understand one by one, Interest is something you love doing and aptitude is something in which you will excel if trained in that particular area. Aptitude is your innate ability. Do you need interest or aptitude, or both? The answer is both. Psychologists or career counselors could be the best place to find your areas of interest and aptitude. Once the career is chosen based on your capabilities and interest, the motivation to excel in that field follows automatically. Your personality traits also play a role in work-life satisfaction. For instance, you can have a good salesman ability, and you are also interested but you are an introvert. This can create an uncomfortable situation for you. The stress of a career comes with a lot of gender disparity. There is a three-step plan in careers: Growth, Progress, and Success. Growth is growing in terms of money. We all grow, but are you progressing and succeeding? Progress comes up with discipline and change in lifestyle and success with a social cause. If you are making a product, is it seldom for profit or is it also for the interest of the public? How do you make monetary terms? Respecting your profession is the first key. Nothing in the world comes gratis, till the time you don’t respect your choice of career. In the long run, choosing a career only because it seems promising, the chances are that excellence won’t be satisfactory. The consequence might be a short temperament, low self-esteem, and a plethora of stress. Career guidance of a professional and knowing your stressors is the ultimate solution to being confident and content with your career choice.
