Thursdays with NAMI: Fighting against mental illness stigma in the Chinese American community

May 4, 2023

Linda Li is well acquainted with the unique impact of mental illness and suicide on her Chinese American community. Her childhood friend died by suicide.

Today she is channeling that grief to help others. Through her role on the United Chinese Americans WAVES team, she hopes to bring her soon-to-be professional expertise, as well as her personal experiences, to support Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities as they grapple with how to address mental illness, inter-generational trauma, and racial and cultural identity.

She received her B.S. degree from Emory University in 2019, with a double major in biology and English/creative writing. Following college, she received a Fulbright grant to teach English to elementary and junior high students in rural Taiwan from 2019-2020. Now a 3rd year medical student at Duke with ambitions of specializing in psychiatry, Linda has been a firm advocate of wellness and the de-stigmatization of mental illness throughout her undergraduate and now medical school years. Her passions for AAPI mental health, health literacy and disparities, and medical humanities speak through her own service, storytelling, and art.

Join us for a conversation on AAPI mental health. This event is free and open to the public. Find us on Facebook Live or register to participate on Zoom: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Ry-Ox5JVTKqITT8Unp_YiQ.
