Today is the third Monday of January and if often referred to a ‘Blue Monday.’ The reason for this is that it is believed to be the most depressing day of the year.
The term ‘Blue Monday’ was conjured up in 2005 by a Travel Company! It was initially used as an advertising strategy, however, many people have agreed that this time of year, is in fact the most depressing time.
Some of the reasons behind the surge in depressive moods are as follows:
Being back to work after the holidays – Many companies give their employees some time off over Christmas; for example Jacob had 11 days off between 23rd December – 3rd January, so adjusting back into a work routine can be quite difficult! 61% of British people stated that they feel more depressed when travelling to work during this time of year.
The weather. The dark mornings, cold days and rainy nights are not to everyones liking. 87% of people said that they feel the weather has a direct impact on their mood.
Debt/Financial struggles – Christmas can be an expensive time of the year, so when January comes around, finances may be tighter than usual. For some people (myself included), the holidays can alter your usual payday timings. For example, I was paid early due to bank holidays, meaning that my December pay had to last me an extra week until my January pay. Things like this can have a negative impact on a persons mood.
Brew Monday was then conjured up by The Samaritans as a way of raising awareness for mental health and encouraging people to reach out to their loved ones and stay in touch with one another after the chaos of the holidays, as well as making people aware of the various charities and resources that are available to those who are struggling.
The Samaritans are available 24/7 every day of the year – you can give them a call on 116 123 – or check out their website for alternative forms of contact.
