My mum cleaned my room a few days ago and it’s probably the first time I could finally breathe in my own space without feeling overwhelmed or down. She hasn’t cleaned my room since my early teens, I am currently 25 (For 10 more days).

Your room is more than often a reflection of your mental wellness, and my room?

It was so bad I considered hiring cleaners. Let’s just say my mother did the impossible ’cause I absolutely would not have done that and she did it in hours. It would have taken me weeks and I must say, it’s nice to see my floor again.

Summer is over and autumn or ”fall” if you’re American or Canadian ,well, it’s finally here. My personal favourite time of the year. It’s time to declutter your space and prepare for cosiness and probably spending more time in doors.

Assuming your space is not as bad as mine, before it gets colder and harder to get up from under your partner, categorise what needs to stay and what needs to go. Do you really need those boots? Can those clothes be sold or possibly given to charity? Like the autumn leaves falling to the ground, it’s time to let go.

Must I remind you again that you are the most important person in your life? ’cause I will, I’ll never stop, so please remember to take care of yourself.

If you’re looking for an easy way to reduce stress, decluttering your environment may be a good place to start. Getting rid of excess stuff can benefit your mental health by making you feel calmer, happier, and more in control. A tidier space can make for a more relaxed mind

I didn’t mean for my room to be that messy. My personal hygiene didn’t lack but my space? Clothes everywhere, broken candles, broken glass, make up brushes in places they shouldn’t have been, don’t get my started on my skincare products. My room mirrored my mind. I was low, mentally exhausted, physically too as I lost a lot of sleep or slept a lot. I could feel my lonely depressive state hovering over my head and coming home to a clean room made me feel like myself again.

I can breathe again.

Picking yourself up is very difficult, but it’s the little things. Finally taking out the dirty cups and plates to the kitchen, yes those empty water bottles too. Telling someone you trust about the state of your mental health, it be a parent, sibling, friend or therapist because you deserve to have a decluttered mind.

It starts with taking a step back, examining yourself and admitting that you need help and it’s always okay to ask for help. I think I got lucky, I was too embarrassed to ask for help but I am extremely grateful that even after all these years, I am still my mother’s baby girl.

Being able to pick yourself up and declutter your space will not only have a positive impact on your mental state but also increase the feel good hormone ”serotonin” in your brain. If you are like me and like all kinds of music, create a playlist and dance while you clean, I mean why not? No one else is watching.

All in all, the best way to enter autumn and winter would be by having a deep clean and treating yourself to a new set of PJ’s and if you still feel overwhelmed you can start small like changing the sheets. Stay kind to yourself and remember everything will be okay.
